Resumen
Dentro de las principales manife
staciones del cambio climático
se encuentra la acidificación oceánica;
Ocean acid ification is among the main manifestations of climate change; This phenomenon is caused by the dissolution in the sea of atmospheric carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels. This decrease in pH implies detrimental effects for marine organisms wit h carbonate skeletons. In recent years there has been an increase in studies aimed at temporarily characterizing the acidification process in various regions of the planet using corals and stable isotopes incorporated into their carbonate skeletons. The ob jective of this study is to analyze the historical variation of the pH of the water in the Ensenada of Rancho Luna, using the isotope composition of boron (δ 11 B) in the periodic growth bands of the skeleton of the massive coral Orbicella faveolata . The reconstructed series, with annual resolution, covers a period from the year 1800 to the present and represents the first study related to the evolution of the acidification process in Cuba. The results show a historical series of 215 years with an average value of δ11B of 25.09 ‰ and a pH of 8.09, the rate of decrease of pH for the area is - 0,00027 units of pH / year, a lower order to the one reported for reefs in Australia and New Caledonia. The results of this study directly contribute to the fulfillment of the national commitments related to Sustainable Development Goal number 14.
