In order to diagnose the biodeterioration by insects and filamentous fungi of the collection of rare books with Patrimonial Value of the Archive “Coronado”, visual inspection of all the documents to detect the alterations was performed, to identify the species and to determine the deteriorating activity of the fungi. These alterations are observed in 94, 1% of the documents. The incidence in decrease order of frequency of appearance for insects are: mines, rests of insects, erosion, excrets and live insects; for fungi, spots and molds. Of 66 documents with damage by insects, 13,6 % showed low damage intensity, 60,6% medium and 25,8% high. Of 70 exemplars with possible alterations caused by fungi, 2,9% showed mold of low intensity, in the case of foxing 7,1% are of low, 85,7% medium and 7,1% high intensity, while1,4% have spots different from foxing of low intensity. The live insects belong to the order Blattodea and Psocoptera. Specimens and/or remains of Lasioderma serricorne and insects of the order Coleoptera, family Tenebrionidae and order Dermaptera are present. Presumably insects of orders Isoptera and Coleoptera caused mines. Two species of tehe genus Penicillium and a isolate of Aspergillus sclerotiorum, that possess cellulolytic activity, produce acids and pigments. A. sclerotiorum the only specie that remains viable in the paper, in addition presents proteolytic and amylolytic activity. The cellulolytic activities (FPasa) and β-Endoglucanasa of these isolates are low and are expressed later. It is recommended to take into account this diagnosis in order to planning a strategy to control the biodeterioration of these documents and their restautartion.
