A task-based Framework proposal for teaching reading comprehension at the Medical School
(Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas, 2013-07-05) Cairo Molinet, Julian; Bernal Díaz, Pedro Santiago
English reading comprehension in integration with the rest of the language skills is a tool for the professional work and the scientific development of future health professional in medical universities. That is why English discipline has been playing a relevant role since 1984 in the curriculum of medical sciences. However, there are inadequacies in the development of reading comprehension skills, among other factors, exercises that appear on the textbook are far from the task-based approach so they are basically reproductive exercises in which students are not expected to complete authentic reading tasks. These aspects have a negative influence on the development of the mentioned language skill in the second year medical students. So it is necessary to find some new ways of teaching reading comprehension to second year medical students at ¨Lidia Doce¨ Medical University Branch. This situation allows stating the following research question: How to develop reading comprehension skills in the teaching of English for general purposes at ¨Lidia Doce¨ Medical University Branch? Systematic evaluation of findings in the pedagogical practice showed the need of designing a framework for applying the task-based approach to the teaching of reading comprehension in second year medical students at ¨Lidia Doce¨ Medical University Branch.

    A Move-Step Analysis of Inter-University Agreements
(Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas, 2013-07-05) Calviño Ruiz, Karen; Llanes Abeijón, Manuel
Inter–University Agreements (IUAs) are legal documents designed for achieving cooperatio among universities. In Cuba, International Relations Officers and translators are the ones responsable for writing or translating these agreements which are mainly prepared in Spanish and English. In spite of the significance of these documents, they might not be as effective as they are meant to be, especially when written in English. This is mainly due to the fact that these agreements use specific lexis , structures and style typical of the legal document style. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the linguistic and comunicative characteristics of IUAs in terms of moves and steps. As a result of this study, its author proposes three diversified intercultural models that Cuban international officers and translators could follow when preparing or translating an IUA into English. From a linguistic point of view, This thesis makes a contribution to the study of specialized texts (mainly legal, business and diplomatic). It is also hoped that this study will increase the competence of Cuban experts, professors and staff when communicating with forign institutions, especially those who had adopted English as their lingua franca . The methodology proposed in this thesis, could apply not only to afficial academic documents but to any other document related to the fields of legal, diplomatic or business comunication.

Characterization of instrumental sub-competence in Cuban medical translators based on a new model of this competence
(Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas, 2013-06-25) Escarrá Jiménez, Alain; Navarrete Reyes, María del Carmen
The arrival of the information era has changed many things. The translation profession has also undergone significant changes. Now, in order to be a competent translator it is a must to be computer literate and to keep one’s information technologies skills updated. The overall aim of this research was to characterize the current condition of instrumental competence among Cuban medical translators. For this purpose a new model of instrumental competence is proposed. Different theoretical and empirical methods were used and the research followed four stages: review of selected research literature, proposal of a new model of Instrumental Competence, data collection and data analysis and findings. This research has both theoretical and practical contributions. The proposal of a new and comprehensive model of instrumental competence adds to the current theory in this field. And the practicality is given by the fact that the results of this research may help to consider new approaches in undergraduate and postgraduate translation courses with respect to the development of this competence. At the end, some recommendations are made to both professors in charge of designing the curricula of translation courses and to the medical translator community. Key words: Translation competence, Instrumental sub-competence, Medical translation, Documentary competence, Information and communication technologies.

Assessing intercultural communication in oral presentations of students of Architecture in English
(Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas, 2013-07-03) Sánchez Carrera, Yanet; Pérez Morales, Juana Idania
In modern society people with different cultural backgrounds are engaged in highly competitive settings and they need to use English language for effective intercultural communication. Students of Architecture at Central University “Marta Abreu” of Las Villas (UCLV) should be able to communicate in English effectively since they are involved in some international collaboration projects with Belgium, Germany and Switzerland where English is used as a lingua franca. They had difficulties in relation to the intercultural awareness necessary to carry out oral presentations about their project designs to succeed in multicultural environments. Since assessment, at a great extent, fosters learning, the overall aim of this research was to provide students of Architecture with the criteria to assess intercultural communication in oral presentations of project designs in English. The proposal included some criteria and rubrics for assessing intercultural communication in oral presentations in this context, a methodology to carry them out and a website that comprised instructional materials for the course English IV.
