Departamento de Lengua Inglesa; Escola Secundária de Chão Bom- Tarrafal, Cape VerdeNowadays intercultural communicative competence (ICC) is an important tool in foreign language teaching and learning. The main goal of this article is to propose some tasks to improve the intercultural communicative competence in the English Language Course at Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas, Santa Clara, Villa Clara, Cuba. In so doing, the article provides some theoretical foundations of concepts related to culture, communicative competence, intercultural communication and intercultural communicative competence. The tasks proposed can be adapted to different contexts, taking into account learners’ needs and interests. They apply the four language skills at the same time, combining communicative competence and intercultural communicative competence, the two aspects that make a learner a perfect mediator within the teaching and learning process of a foreign language.Ítem Acceso Abierto Acciones de superación profesional para potenciar la competencia en comunicación de resultados científicos(2017-05) Ruiz Díaz, Alexeis; Roque Doval, Yamila; Rodríguez Ruiz, Mayra; Universidad Central ¨Marta Abreu¨de Las VillasEl objetivo general de este artículo de investigación es proponer un plan de acciones de superación profesional que contribuya a potenciar la competencia en comunicación de resultados científicos en docentes de los centros universitarios municipales. Se parte de un enfoque de complementariedad metodológica que combina diferentes métodos cuantitativos y cualitativos en función de objetivos específicos. El contexto de intervención y diagnóstico es el Centro Universitario Municipal de Sagua la Grande y la muestra la constituyó el total de 25 profesoras y profesores que conforman el claustro de la carrera Ingeniería Industrial de esta institución, adscrita a la Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas, en Cuba. Se ofrecen las regularidades emanadas de la etapa de diagnóstico inicial de las necesidades de superación del personal docente muestreado y del nivel en que se encontraba la variable competencia en comunicación de resultados científicos. Con esa información que justifica los propósitos de la investigación, se modela el proceso de superación con enfoque de sistema y se ofrece como resultado práctico la organización y diseño de un plan de acciones de superación a través de formas de postgrado como el diplomado y el entrenamiento para la fase de implementación.Ítem Acceso Abierto Activities to foster the use of hedging by English Language students(2020-07) Garciga Fernández, Rocío; Mercedo Torna, Nail; Rodríguez Ruiz, Mayra; Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas. Departamento de Lengua InglesaIntroduction: In today’s interconnected world, academic writing plays a crucial role since it allows professionals and scientists to disseminate their research and findings in their fields. Academic writing exhibits six main features: it is complex, formal, objective, explicit, hedged, and responsible. Hedges are linguistic devices which writers use to present statements with accuracy and caution, without commitment, and protecting themselves from the audience’s criticism. Despite its confirmed importance, hedging has received less attention leading to the lack of knowledge about this linguistic resource and its inadequate use. Students of the course English Language with a Second Foreign Language (French) at Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas are faced with this problem since they have not received enough training about how to hedge in academic writing. Objetive: propose a set of activities to help these students to properly hedge in academic writing. Departamento de Lengua InglesaThis article describes the use of an English-Spanish Parallel Corpus of Science and Technology Texts which pursues the objective of enhancing the translation competence of the fourth-year students ofthe degree course English Language with Second Foreign Language (French), at Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas. The research adopted a mixed-method approach design for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting the data related to the translation of science and technology texts, and to diagnose the needs of the students in that respect. The design of the Corpus followed the guidelines of corpus linguistics as a methodology. A corpus of 50 science and technology texts in English, and their translations into Spanish, on the domains of medicine, physics, chemistry and artificial intelligence, was compiled and processed using Corpus processing tools such as OmegaT aligner and Xbench software. It provides a wide range of lexical, syntactical and textual examples in English with their equivalents in Spanish, in order to help students integrate the necessary knowledge and skills to translate those texts, through a process-oriented approach to translation. The corpus derived a word bank of science and technology terms and a proposal of corpus-based exercises to be used in teaching translation.Ítem Acceso Abierto Enhancing students´ vocabulary at the preparatory course using mobile learning(2020-03) Bande González, Lilibet; Pérez Morales, Juana Idania; Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas. Departamento de Lengua InglesaLearning English is essential in today´s world and the learning process goes beyond the mastery of the four basic skills; it requires the learner to have a significant vocabulary range in order to perform efficiently in a given area. This can be done by using mobile learning pedagogy encouraging learners’ autonomy and involvement in the learning task. At the Universidad Central «Marta Abreu» de Las Villas the Preparatory course students face some limitations concerning vocabulary, evidenced in some communication breakdowns when communicating in English. The purpose of this research is to propose the creation of an app to broaden students’ vocabulary to foster students’ fluency when communicating in English. A qualitative methodology was used in the study including some methods from the theoretical, empirical and mathematical level. As a result, it was evidenced that students’ lack of vocabulary is due to the fact that some topics are taught in all the skills and hence the vocabulary is more consolidated while others are dealt in only one skill resulting in poor systematization. Mastering Academic English is probably one of the most reliable ways of attaining socioeconomic success in today's society.It provides professionals with employability and the opportunity to disseminate the scientific results all over the world by applying it in different fields of study. However, in the English Language course with a second foreign language: French at the Universidad Central «Marta Abreu» de Las Villas, there are not enough didactic materials to develop those skills in the subject English Language II, devoted to the study of English for Academic Purposes, which were evidenced by an extensive analysis of the syllabus of the subject and by the application of surveys to professors and students. Facultad de Humanidades. Departamento de Lengua InglesaCommunicative competence in English entails the understanding of history of English- speaking countries as an intercultural component. In this research context, some shortages concerning the bibliography of this subject have been evidenced in the degree course English Language with French as a second foreign language at the Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas. The purpose of this research was to propose multimedia to enrich the existing bibliography of the History of English Speaking countries I. A qualitative methodology was used in the study including some methods from the theoretical, empirical and mathematical level. The context analysis confirmed some limitations concerning the quantity, quality and variety of the bibliographical resources, problems in respect to the students’ accessibility to the bibliography resulting in poor motivation for the contents of the subject. For this research, professors on History of English-Speaking Countries as well as specialists from the ICTs were consulted. They both evaluated the didactic and technological design of the multimedia and agreed that it meets the necessary requirements as a valid proposal positively impacting on the teaching and learning process of the subject. El objetivo de este trabajo se orienta a presen-tar una propuesta metodológica para el empleo de canciones en inglés que contribuya al desarrollo de las estrategias de aprendizaje y de la comprensión auditiva. En el trabajo se exponen los mecanismos fi-siológicos, psicológicos, afectivos y de memoria que se activan con el uso de canciones que a su vez con-tribuyen a motivar a los estudiantes hacia la asigna-tura. Se propuso una visión actualizada de las necesidades de comunicación en el idioma extranjero del personal especialista y no especialista en inglés, con una visión sistémica que tenga en cuenta las características de la universidad. También, se analizaron las formas fundamentales de posgrado factibles de implementar y sus modalidades para eliminar las debilidades detectadas y perfilar el enfoque centrado en el inglés con fines específicos, tanto con fines académicos como profesionales. Departamento de Lengua InglesaLa introducción del análisis crítico del discurso (ACD), en la enseñanza de la interpretación resulta una poderosa herramienta para la formación de intérpretes. La gran mayoría de las veces, no se valora suficientemente el trabajo del intérprete, y probablemente, esto sucede porque se desconoce todo lo que conlleva, desde el tiempo previo a su ejercicio (con la documentación) hasta el proceso mismo de la interpretación. En el presente trabajo pretendemos demostrar la utilidad del ACD, como enfoque en la enseñanza de la interpretación. Para ello nos referiremos a conceptos y términos básicos necesarios para el establecimiento del marco teórico conceptual y posteriormente al desarrollo histórico del análisis crítico del discurso y la interpretación.
