Resumen
In Cuba, English is taught as a foreign language. In Higher Education, English is
taught through Plans D and E, and it has always been in transformations that demand
constant research. The development of reading skills in Plan D is one of the most
studied topics and that is why the objective of this research is to propose a booklet of
texts with exercises using English for Specific Purposes to develop reading skills in
second year students of Agricultural Engineering at Universidad Central “Marta
Abreu” de Las Villas. The methodology applied corresponds to a dialectical approach
in which a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods is used. The practical
contribution is given by the design of a booklet of texts with exercises that contributes
to the development of English reading skills in second year students of Agricultural
Engineering. The booklet is proposed as a complementary material that could be
helpful for students and teachers when dealing with reading. The proposal was
assessed by the specialists’ criteria who agreed that the booklet meets the second
year Agriculture Engineering students’ ESP learning needs.
