Resumen

Wind power is expected to achieve high levels of integration in the near future since it is rapidly becoming one of the most prominent sources of electrical energy. Great attention has been given to studying the impact of wind power on power system stability. Since wind power plants differ from conventional production plants their interaction with the power system diverge from the “classical” behavior. W Generally, this study seeks to determine how wind farms affect the grid to which they are connected by, among other things, analyzing the wind farm’s and the system’s response to various faults in the grid. This was done by using MATLAB (version 7.3) and PSX (version 2.81) software to simulate a proposed isolated wind-fuel power system in Villa Clara, Cuba. It was concluded that wind farms do, in fact, introduce voltage and frequency instability into power systems especially those using squirrel cage induction generators since they absorb reactive power during normal operation and moreso during system faults. Also, the proposed wind-fuel network of Villa Clara is susceptible to blackouts due to voltage fluctuations because of the weakness of the connection point of the wind farm to the grid. It will be necessary to apply some form of reactive power compensation.
