This paper describes the use of an English-Spanish Sentence-Aligned Parallel Corpus of Science and Technology Texts for enhancing the translation competence of fourth-year students of the degree course English Language with Second Foreign Language (French), at Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de las Villas. For this purpose, a corpus of 50 English science and technology texts and their translations into Spanish was compiled, including the domains of medicine, physics, chemistry and artificial intelligence. The dataset was collected and processed using corpus tools, such as OmegaT aligner, Xbench, and AntConc. The research adopted a mixed-method approach designed for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting both quantitative and qualitative data. The results from the survey applied to students evidenced some difficulties in choosing the right equivalent for some words and phrases in the process of translating science and technology texts. The design of the proposal called ParaCorp2020 followed a process-oriented approach to translation. It provides a wide range of lexical, syntactical and textual examples found in the English texts, with their equivalents in Spanish, in order to help students, integrate the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully translate science and technology texts. Also, a word bank was derived from the corpus, as a supporting material for the acquisition and systematization of specialized terminology and a group of corpus-based activities was elaborated to aid the translation process in the classroom.

The general aim of the present research is to build a tool for the study of translation based on an English-Spanish parallel corpus as well as to assess its usefulness as an aid to systematize the study of translation and to achieve a higher translation competence by students in English Language Studies at the UCLV. This research provides empirical support for the teaching and learning of English-Spanish translation. The novelty of the research is that it is a contribution to English Language Studies translation subjects for the systematic study of translation using corpus linguistics. This is the first time that the issue of translation tools is tackled in the Department of English Studies at the UCLV. Internationally, there has been a lot of research in the area of computer-aided translation in general but less in the area of computer-aided translation study and training, as opposed to research and professional practice. For this reason our research may be a modest contribution to the field. From a theoretical perspective this dissertation contributes to the study of translation pedagogy in Cuba by delving into the conception and design of parallel corpora for didactic use. From a practical point of view the present research is important for the practice of translation because it may help to facilitate the study and practice of English-Spanish translation for students of English Language Studies using a bilingual corpus of texts. Key words: translation, parallel corpus, computer-aided translation, translation didactics

A web site for the discipline Panorama of the English-Speaking Countries
(Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas, 2007-06-25) Elutil Compte, Lisandra; Nuñez Zayas, Leidanys; Rodríguez Ruiz, Mayra
Since the invention of computers, they have had a great impact on every human action because of their wide number of applications. At present, computers are used in the educational process as a teaching aid at different levels of the Cuban educational system, especially in higher education. Teachers consult a wide range of Web pages which are useful in their daily work; also students look for information in Web pages for their research papers and other activities. Building Web pages and Web sites with hyperlinks to Internet for higher education students in Cuba offers a lot of advantages: they may support the existing bibliography for different subjects, the information is given in an organized way, they provide orientation, links with other Web pages through Internet and they cut down the research time. In our University there are some courses such as ours in which the insufficient bibliography affects the teaching and leaning process, books are not enough; or they are not accessible to everyone and/or in some cases not all the information required is there or it is not well organized, or it is not updated. In this Major Paper we propose a Web site to improve the teaching and leaning process of the discipline Panorama of the English-Speaking Countries. The research paper consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 deals with the theoretical bases of the development of the teaching and learning process with the aim of ICT in the training of students of English Language with a Second Foreign Language (French). Chapter 2 consists of the characterization of the sample, main methods and instruments used, and the analysis of the results obtained from the diagnosis. Chapter 3 is the proposal of a Web site to improve the teaching and learning process of the discipline Panorama of English– Speaking Countries, and also its evaluation according to the criteria of students and teachers. Finally, conclusions, recommendations, bibliography and appendixes are included.

Creation of a Favourable Environment for the Teaching and Learning of Intercultural Communication in the English Introductory Course
(Universidad Central “Marta Abreu” de Las Villas, 2013-06-20) Delgado, Jessica; Rodríguez Ruiz, Mayra
Culture plays an important role in foreign language teaching and learning. However, most frequently it is found that students to a great extent are taught the rules of language, but are not always able to communicate adequately since they are not knowledgeable enough about the target culture. Taking into consideration this matter, it is extremely fundamental that students should have some background about the culture of the language studied from the very beginning. Taking into account the current situation of the teaching and learning process of English in the Introductory Course, the objective of this Diploma Paper is to propose the creation of a favourable environment for the teaching and learning of intercultural communication in the English Introductory Course in the faculty of Humanities at the Central University “Marta Abreu” of Las Villas. Key words: culture; intercultural communication; language; foreign language teaching and learning
