In the present research, the study of the absorption-desorption kinetics of moisture in materials of different nature when there is some dependence of the diffusion coefficient with the concentration of the diffusing substance is presented. Absorption mechanisms are classified basically into two types: when the transport of substance, caused by the presence of a concentrations gradient in the system, and due to random molecular movement, is the predominant process, which is called fickian diffusion; and non-fickian diffusion, in which the diffusive flow is present, but there is a marked interaction between the molecules of the material with the molecules of the diffusing or penetrating substance. The non-fickian diffusion is explained in terms of the functional dependence between the diffusion coefficient and the diffusing substance concentration, through the introduction of several representative functions of this dependence, which have been classically reported in the literature. The boundary problem is formulated, assuming such dependencies between the diffusion coefficient and the concentration, to model the moisture diffusion in the experimental specimens usually used in the wetting tests. The problem formulated is solved in the Wolfram Mathematica 11.0 and with the use of the Method of Lines. The fundamental result is a numerical procedure, which has been implemented computationally, which qualitatively and quantitatively characterizes the kinetics of diffusion of moisture in materials where there is a certain dependence of the diffusion coefficient with the diffusing substance concentration. The kinetic parameters of the moisture diffusion in different types of materials, with or without dependence on the moisture diffusion coefficient with the concentration, can be estimated using both this procedure and the experimental data obtained from the classic wetting tests. The proposed model is validated by fitting it to the experimental data reported for moisture absorption in a quasi-ceramic matrix destined to agglomerated fluxes for Submerged Arc Welding.
