We performed a study to assess the influence of thought suppression, gender and institutionalization of memory and thought in the elderly for which it was selected a sample of 98 individuals. This research was developed in the time interval from January 1 to June 30, 2011. We develop a non-experimental study in an explanatory simple random probability sampling, using a quantitative methodology. For data collection techniques were used as semi-structured interview, observation, and method of Excluded Fourth, Pictogram, Memory 10 words and White Bear Suppression Inventory (WBSI). The results were processed using the statistical package SPSS version 13.0. The results demonstrate the existence of a trend towards the removal of high level, which affects the voluntary recall, generalization and associations of thought, while institutionalization is a factor that negatively impacts the quality of memory, no differences significant by gender.
