Summary With an increase in demographic and technological development, comes the upsurge in transportation, this leads to increased repetition of axial load. An increase in transport load and employment of new materials is a recurring decimal in pavement development. In this study, use was made of ample bibliographical references, with detailed demonstration of international developmental tendency for the use of empirical mechanics method of pavement design, like the new AASHTO guide. Based on this, we analyzed the possibility of checking the structures of designed pavements, actually in Cuba, with a method that is marginally empirical and based on empirical mechanics concept. To achieve the set objective, we employed the use of professional Abaqus software which permits the analysis of tension deformations of designed structures. Finally, this study was able to establish a procedure for the testing of some of the criteria in the guide earlier cited.
