Documentary preservation is an essential aspect to maintain the integrity of the sources, especially the patrimonial ones. The provincial library “Martí” of Villa Clara treasures documents classified as Rare and Valuable Funds. The stored collections lack a diagnosis that determines the factors of deterioration to which they are exposed. The objective of the study is to identify the main factors of deterioration of organic materials and the effects that are manifested in the Rare and Valuable Funds of the provincial library “Martí” of Villa Clara. The research classifies as descriptive. To obtain results, methods are used at the theoretical and empirical levels. At the theoretical level, the analytical-synthetic, systemic-structural, historical-logical and inductive-deductive are used. At the empirical level, observation, classical documentary analysis and the survey were used. The techniques used were the interview, the questionnaire, observation guides and the bibliographic review. To identify the effects of the collections, the methodology developed by the national library “José Martí” was used, under the title: Diagnosis Worksheet for Libraries and Archives. They are identified as the main factors of deterioration of the sources of insects, acidity, changes in coloration, yellowing, dust and, to a lesser extent, spots. The identified elements are combined with mechanical physical elements that could cause great damage to the integrity of the documents. Based on the results obtained, the need to prioritize strategies for the improvement of the conservation conditions in the institution was evident, especially in the sources that have high patrimonial value
