Instance based learning algorithms are sensitive to the definition of similarity function used. The performance of the resulting classifier largely depends on this component. Fuzzy instance based classifiers are also dependent of membership functions used to define fuzzy partitions for modeling continuous attributes. This work proposes an algorithm for estimating the best fuzzy partition for a given dataset in order to improve classification accuracy. The optimal fuzzy partition is determined using a steepest descent algorithm. This algorithm is invoked to modify membership function parameters in the negative gradient direction of the error function. Additionally, this procedure is combined with the Monte Carlo method to avoid local minimum during search process. Results obtained with this method are competitive compared to other state of the arts machine learning algorithms.
