Departamento de Lengua InglesaLearning English is essential in todayĀ“s world and the learning process goes beyond the mastery of the four basic skills; it requires the learner to have a significant vocabulary range in order to perform efficiently in a given area. This can be done by using mobile learning pedagogy encouraging learnersā autonomy and involvement in the learning task. At the Universidad Central Ā«Marta AbreuĀ» de Las Villas the Preparatory course students face some limitations concerning vocabulary, evidenced in some communication breakdowns when communicating in English. The purpose of this research is to propose the creation of an app to broaden studentsā vocabulary to foster studentsā fluency when communicating in English. A qualitative methodology was used in the study including some methods from the theoretical, empirical and mathematical level. As a result, it was evidenced that studentsā lack of vocabulary is due to the fact that some topics are taught in all the skills and hence the vocabulary is more consolidated while others are dealt in only one skill resulting in poor systematization. Therefore, it was necessary to design an app for the cell phones to provide the vocabulary in those topics and skills that students need for communicating efficiently.Ćtem Acceso Abierto Activities to foster the use of hedging by English Language students(2020-07) Garciga FernĆ”ndez, RocĆo; Mercedo Torna, Nail; RodrĆguez Ruiz, Mayra; Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas. Facultad de Humanidades. Departamento de Lengua InglesaIntroduction: In todayās interconnected world, academic writing plays a crucial role since it allows professionals and scientists to disseminate their research and findings in their fields. Academic writing exhibits six main features: it is complex, formal, objective, explicit, hedged, and responsible. Hedges are linguistic devices which writers use to present statements with accuracy and caution, without commitment, and protecting themselves from the audienceās criticism. Despite its confirmed importance, hedging has received less attention leading to the lack of knowledge about this linguistic resource and its inadequate use. Facultad de Humanidades. Departamento de Lengua Inglesa; Artiles Castro, MiriamAcademic writing has its own rules and practices which may be organized in accordance with a specific arrangement in order to present ideas and to assure to support them by author citations. Professional academic writing consists of a series of factual statements which are added to the truth, mainly in the hard sciences. However, it is now widely recognized that any written text involves an interaction between writer and reader. In this interaction readers anticipate the lines of thought of writers, interrogate them, and evaluate the piece of writing for its usefulness and importance to their own research). Facultad de Humanidades. Departamento de Lengua Inglesa; Artiles Castro, MiriamTranslation has been used for foreign language teaching since the 19th century when modern languages began to appear in school curricula. Its strength on the field of foreign language teaching resides in the fact that is used to demonstrate the learner's knowledge of the foreign language, either as a form of control or to exercise his intelligence in order to develop his competence. One of the main problems for translation students is their difficulties to translate certain pragmatic elements of the text such as hedging devices. This could lead to errors in comprehending the textās ideas and the authorās initial intentions. During the process of translation, when a problem emerges, translators need to put into practice strategies to solve such problem. A translation strategy is a conscious problem solving procedure that comes from the translatorās previous knowledge. As stylistic devices, hedges are embedded in several discourses. The present research focuses on hedges in journalistic discourse because it has not received much attention among scholars. This research is aimed at identifying the strategies most commonly used for the translation of hedging devices used in online English newspaper articles on climate change. It is carried out through a comparative analysis of a parallel English-Spanish corpus compiled from the newsroom of present in the websites of different international and regional environmental agencies. Finally, it presents a set of strategies for the translation of hedging devices that can help improve the teaching and learning process in the subject of Translation of Journalistic Texts.Ćtem Acceso Abierto Using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in the teaching and learning process of English as a foreign language(FeijĆ³o, 2021) PĆ©rez Morales, Juana Idania; Universidad Central "Marta Abreu" de Las Villas.
